Cancer does not
concern itself with fairness. It does not
worry about our families or our children.
It does not care about the enormous
financial burden it imposes on those often
too sick or too busy caring for a loved one
to work. It will fight as hard to survive
as will the individual that it inflicts. It
is cancer and cancer has a way of changing
lives.
“Bookmarks
for Mom” began with three children that saw
just how selfish cancer is. They became
three children that worried about fairness,
three children that worried about their
families and their friends.
Three
children that discovered the Courage
and Faith to help someone they loved
deeply to Recover, Achieve,
Strive and Hope for a cure.
Three children changed by cancer.
Four years later these
children are teenagers and just as they have
grown so has “Bookmarks for Mom.” We have
developed a Family Care Program to address
the immediate needs of families facing the
additional financial burden that cancer
imposes on them. Matt, Shae and Dari will
continue to raise funds and I will continue
to manage the website Bookmarksformom.org.
This has become a passion for all of us.
As a friend, I still
struggle with the loss of Susan Jewells and
the unforgettable friendship that we
shared. I am reminded by the gentlest of
whispers that I must look to her rainbow and
remember “there is no visible beginning and
no visible end, but I see it and I know its
beauty.” As a friend I know I must bare
witness to Susan’s strength and courage and
I too must find it, even on the toughest of
days because cancer has a way of changing
lives.
